Twiddy Turns 30

This year Twiddy & Company celebrates their 30th year operating on the Outer Banks. Here is the story of Twiddy from their website:

"We began our business in 1978. Initially we sold real estate from our car on site in Ocean Dunes. The following year we built our tiny office as close to the road as possible, so that the occasional driver might be tempted to pull in and talk about buying property in Duck. Our office floorplan was a one bedroom house plan, a backup strategy in case the business didn’t succeed.

There were no grocery stores on the beach. None. Winks in Kitty Hawk had bread, milk, etc. We drove to Manteo, Grandy or Chesapeake for groceries.

The first oceanfront lots sold for $17,500. There are no numbers missing. That was the price and there was a lot of effort in persuading people to buy.

When we decided that we would need to get into the rental business we persuaded 4 families to give us a chance.

In 1979 there was Carolina Dunes, Sanderling and Sound & Sea Village in Duck and a new ribbon of asphalt into Ocean Dunes. The paved road ended after what is now the Sanderling. There was no paved road to Corolla. Almost every year after that there was a new road paved between highway 12 and the ocean. Communities like Sand Dollar Shores, Poteskeet, Tuckahoe and Nantucket followed. The value of property appreciated. We added a part time employee.

Packing for a vacation here meant packing linens and groceries, so cars were bulging at the seams and travelers erupted from the car when they arrived. There were knocks on our door in Ocean Dunes to borrow an iron or a mixer. Our kids were an amenity and many a vacationer knocked to announce that they were back to play. We set nets, shared fish, and taught many how to cook them. Gallop’s vegetable truck drove through the neighborhoods selling the bounty of summer. A ride on the tailgate was a highlight in the day.

In 1981, the first Twiddy & Company Realtors office was opened in Corolla. It was located in a small space next to Winks and the post office. We spent our time between Duck and Corolla and had native, Shirley Austin, man our Corolla location. In 1985, they paved the road to Corolla.

With every year we had hopes of turning a profit, but instead every year we added a new employee or expanded our offices. We reinvested in ourselves.

We have added on to the Duck office 5 times. This year, in November, we demolished the original structure. Many people arriving for Thanksgiving lost their bearings when we weren’t in our landmark spot. We are rebuilding hard and fast with a vision for 30 more years.

In Corolla, we operated out of the US Lifesaving Station that we moved to Corolla. We built our current office and then expanded that. We have 90 employees as well as our sales team.

In 2008, we represent over 770 homes in Duck, Corolla and in the 4 wheel drive communities of Swan, North Swan and Carova beach.

Our employees have become longtime contributors to our success. Each of our children has tended to linens, plunged toilets, cleaned houses, delivered air filters and entered data to help us succeed.

We are still a privately owned family business with the intent to go another 30.

Our employees work hard to extend the hospitality and integrity that we have always felt were valuable cornerstones. They are often at their best in the most difficult situations. We marvel at their talents and their commitment.

We celebrate this 30th year with wonder and pride that so much has occurred. We no longer have to explain to people where Duck is. We no longer have to loan irons or mixers.

Much change has occurred. We have all witnessed it.

The constant has been the ritual of a family vacation. Not much beats the anticipation of a week at the ocean. Sharing moments on vacation that collect family histories and speak of a life well spent."

Summer.... It is Here

Summer has finally arrived, and I'm sure everybody is exited. We're going to have great season this year. We've made a small improvement to the wireless internet, making it faster and much more reliable. We also added password protection. Among new things in the area is the addition of yet another boardwalk to the sound, this time, it is across the street from The Corolla Schoolhouse Wild Horse Museum. There will be a new watersports business operating out of a small building and boardwalk next to the photography studio, which is behind the Island Bookstore. That should be cool, with the closest watersports at Timbuck II, it'll be nice to have something closer, and possibly a little less crowded. Have a great summer everybody!

The Beach Update

As spring is upon us, we all begin to think about summer. Who doesn't? The house is booked for most of the summer already! This year in the Villages at Ocean Hill, there are new boardwalks connecting the Windance Lane sections to Atlantic Avenue in Ocean Hill, allowing for other guests to access the beach safely. Even though there is a boardwalk right next to the house, the info might be helpful for friends staying in other homes in V@OH.

Well, 2007 is over and 2008 has begun. What a year it has been! Unfortunately we could not make it down to the Outer Banks to celebrate the new year, but I'm sure it was filled with Corolla police officers roaming the beaches telling people not to set off fireworks (they were on the 4th of July). People most likely set them off anyway. Good for them! Keeping New Years fun. Anyway, have an awesome new year. Yeah.

Wowwwwwww. I can;t believe that December is almost over and that the holidays are once again gone! So, we were going to be at Heavenly Daze for New Years, but we had some changes of plans. Anyway, I wish all a happy New Year and good times at Heavenly Daze!

Play and Feed Hungry People

So I've been browsing the web a lot lately, with the xmas shopping in full swing. Recently, however, I have come upon 2 sites that have a very good heart. They are called Free Rice and the Hunger Site. They were both created by the same guy, and both give food to the hungry. The Hunger Site is simple, you click a link and a cup of food is donated. With Free Rice, you guess at vocabulary words, and with each word correctly guessed, 20 grains of rice are donated to the hungry. All of the food is paid for by advertisers, and the sites are really easy to use. I play the vocab game whenever I'm bored. So try them out, and comment on this post to say what you've donated!

Ok, I know I haven' been blogging for a while. So what better time than a snowy weekend in Northern New Jersey? As the holiday season is already upon us, I want to wish everybody a Happy Holiday season and happy New Year. We're going to be at Heavenly Daze for New Years, and there's sure to be some kind of fireworks, even though the Corolla police hate it (why can't some people just have some fun). Regardless of the law, dozens of shops in the area sell all kinds of fireworks. Whatever, I'll forget about all that stuff. Have an awesome month, and I'll get a new post up soon. Happy Holidays to all, and to all a good night. Yeah, haha, I felt like being corny for a second. But seriously, enjoy the season.

Yeah, Summer!

Finally, summer is here!!!!!! The beaches of OBX are awesome, and Corolla is now thriving. Wink's is new and improved after the post office fire. There is a new mexican restaurant called Donkey Hotay's, located in the Corolla Light Shops. Hopefully, Sandcastle Drive won't flood anymore because of the new drainage system (see post below). Corolla is sure to be even more of an awesome place this summer! Enjoy Heavenly Daze to all who stay there!

Hello Everybody! Just back from a great week at Heavenly Daze. I got the chance to take some great photos of the house for the new photo galllery. Check them out below or by clicking on the gallery link to your right. Also, I ran into something unexpected. On one of the nicest days I was there, I walked down the Estaurine Boardwalk. I also walked down the scenic trail. As I was walking, I ran into a couple who said they had just seen a wild horse on the trail! I thought this was unusual, as the wild horses usually can't get across the ocen-to-sound fence that protects them from vehicles. Anyway, I continued on, and as I rounded a corner, I saw two wild horses about 4 yards away from me. I had not seen them because of the corner. I slowly backed away, and took out my camera. The horses were beautiful. I then saw a third horse in the woods away from the others. I tried to get some good photos. There was a tree in the way, and to get it out I would have to get too close for comfort to the beautuful horses. The next day, I walked down to the end of the boardwalk, were I saw people taking photos of the brush. I heard them talking about horses, and they said there was one in the brush. I thought this must have been the same one I had seen the day before. She was hidden a bit, but I tried to get a good photo. Anyway, have a great spring everybody!

The Villages at Ocean Hill has just installed a drainage system for Sandcastle Drive. There are 3 drainage points along the street, which take the water to a small pond across from Route 12. Now, the cul-de-sac in front of Heavenly Daze should no longer flood, along with the rest of Sandcastle Drive. I'll try to get some photos up of the systme soon.

End of Summer 2006

Well, it finally came. Summer Ended last night. Summer 2006 went by especially fast, and Heavenly Daze had a great season. The house will be getting new paint this fall. Thank you to all of our summer guests, and we welcome all off season guests! A reminder as he colder weather rolls in that the house's fireplace only uses firelogs, not real wood. This allows for a safer fire and less smoke entering the home. Otherwise, have a great off season, and we'll see you next year!

About the Villages at Ocean Hill

The Villages at Ocean Hill is a beautiful, smaller community. With many amenities that will suit you needs, like an ocean front and lake front pool. Also, there are four tennis courts, a basketball court, playground, and a fully equipped fitness center for a small fee. There is also a small deck on Crystal Lake, and a boardwalk to the Currituck Sound. Wide shoulders on the roads and bike paths make transportation by foot or bike easy. Need some supplies, food, or ice cream? A short walk to Wink's(a small convenience store) is easy and fun. Ride bikes to the nearby Currituck beach lighthouse or the Whalehead Club historic site and learn a lot about Corolla's history. Please note that in the picture above, VOH1 IS NOT Heavenly Daze! HevDaze is located on the farthest oceanfront lot to the left, next to the beach access.

Heveanly Daze has many Ameneties that will suit you needs. Beds are mad upon arrival, complete with bath towels. The pool will be clean along with the hot tub. We're working on a pool heater!! Big, open decks to watch the ocean are perfect on a sunny day. Take the boardwalk, right next to the house, down to the beach and enjoy the sand in your toes. A Playstation 2 system in the den will keep yu occupied on rainy days. Be sure to bring you own games though!!! Also, we have a Foose Ball table and Free Wireless Internet available to our guests!

Hurricanes have always been pounding the Outer Banks. Corolla has always stood strong. Isabel in 2003 took a few roof shingles and some siding. But Hevdaze stood strong. Hopefully, she always will!

In 2003, the hot tub that was on the smaller south deck was removed, and replaced with a new one in the corner of the pool area. Also in 2003, hurricane Isabel ripped off the stairs of the boardwalk. They were replaced. 2005 saw new carpet to living areas. We also saw a replacement for the blue rocking chair in the great room. It was replaced with a recliner. For 2006, we are planning new paint.

History

Heavenly Daze began in 1992 with the original built in the Villages at Ocean Hill. It was named after a ski trail at the Steamboat Resort in Steamboat Springs, Colarado. The older house is currently Twiddy house # P084. The former Heavenly Daze was sold in 1998 and renamed Just Chillin. Later, in 2005, it was sold again and renamed Anchors Away. The current hevdaze, Twiddy # P188, is the the second to last oceanfront lot in the Villages of Ocean Hill. Completed in 1999, it is the sixth of its design in VOH, and was built by Jim Bickford. The photo above is of Anchors Away, which is the old Heavenly Daze built in 1992.
